It took just under three minutes for the Enterprise State Community College Boll Weevils to eliminate being shut out by the visiting Wallace-Selma Patriots Monday night.
After five minutes, the Patriots ran led 18-8. Midway through the first half the visitors led 34-21, and were ahead at intermission, 59-50.
Wallace held the lead until only 8:40 remained in the game.
“I told our guys to keep playing to finish,” said first-year coach Wesley Person.
And that’s what the Weevils did.
After tying the game at 89-89, the teams swapped baskets until ESCC pulled away at the end, overcame a rash of missed free throws and won 118-113.
“It was an exciting game and I’m proud of the win,” Person said. “I told our guys we’re still in the conference race and that there’s a lot of basketball to be played in February.”
Enterprise improved to 3-4 in conference games with the win.
James Lodman led Enterprise with 26 points despite fouling out with 7:02 to play.
Cary Foster had 25 points, and Marcus Goodman had 22 points that included six three-point shots.
Jason Sillavent and Chris Blount had 16 points apiece, and Tremon Spencer had 14 in the win.
The Weevils travel to Jeff Davis Thursday.
Note: Correction for women's game report previously reported; the ESCC women do not have a game Thursday.
