The Elba High Tigers avenged an earlier loss to Slocomb and won their first game of the 2009 season Friday with an 8-6 come-from-behind victory.
The win was also the first varsity baseball win for Elba coach Bryan Peacock.
Richard “Squeak” Cooks pitched 6 innings for the Tigers and allowed 2 runs but did not figure into the decision.
Dylan McCollough pitched an inning and allowed 4 runs but got the win when Colton Vaughan slammed a walk-off, 2-run home run in the 7th inning.
Elba had opened scoring with a run in the first and added 4 more in the second to lead, 5-1. The Tigers made it 6-1 in the 3rd but the Red Tops fired back with a run in the 5th and 4 more in the 7th to knot the score.
In the home half of the final inning, McCollough drew a walk and then with one out, Vaughan drove the ball over the right-centerfield wall for the win.
“The fact we overcame adversity was important,” Peacock said. “We led throughout the game and then to have it almost slip away from us and then regroup was special.
“I’m pleased with the guy’s effort. We’re not where we want to be yet, but we’re getting there. I’m very pleased with the team tonight.”
The Tigers face Ariton Thursday, and will play in the Mikey Thompkins Memorial Tournament in Enterprise this weekend.
