ELBA –A young Elba Lady Tigers squad hung tough with perennial power Opp Lady Bobcats, but a poor third quarter led to a 56-41 loss Thursday night.
A bad stretch at the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter did not help matters.
Elba (3-5) trailed only 16-11 with about two minutes left in the first quarter.
Opp scored four more points to take a 20-11 lead into the second stanza.
Opp turned the closing spurt and made it into a 13-1 run, controlling a 29-12 lead with 5:30 left in the second quarter.
Elba countered with an 8-2 spurt to slice the Opp advantage to 31-20.
All eight points came from Jacquetta Whitfield.
A Mychal Drew basket with 38 seconds left made the score 33-20 in favor of the Lady Bobcats heading into the locker room.
Any hopes of Elba hanging close were dashed when Opp opened the third period with a 16-2 run.
With 3:37 left to play, Opp controlled a 49-22 lead.
The Lady Tigers committed nine turnovers in the quarter, fueling the Opp run.
Whitfield and Keona Williams managed to give Elba a basket each, and Elba trailed 49-26 entering the final quarter.
Williams, an eighth grader, had a stellar fourth quarter, piling up seven points and six steals.
It ended badly for her, though, when she suffered a head injury with 12.9 seconds left.
When the basketball came loose on a play, she and another Lady Bobcat went for it.
They collided, and Williams hit her head on the floor.
After lying on the floor a few moments, she managed to get to the Elba bench with some assistance.
Shortly after getting to the bench, she started having seizures.and was taken by Coffee County Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital.
After the boys game, school officials said Williams was stable and it appeared she would be OK.
The final 12.9 seconds of the game were not played due to Williams’ injury.
Whitfield led the Lady Tigers with 16 points. Williams added 11.
Elba Lady Tigers head coach Shaun Hammonds said two starters were out with injuries or illness, so he “tried to play a lot of eighth graders.”
“It was a good game to get a lot of work in,” he added.
