The Coffee County Jail will soon have a newer van in its fleet after the Coffee County Commission approved the purchase of one in Monday’s meeting.
Coffee County Sheriff Office Chief Deputy Ronnie Whitworth said the current midsize van, used for taking prisoners to or getting them from state institutions, has more than 200,000 miles on it. The van is used an average of 7,000 miles per month, he added.
With approval, CCSO will begin searching for a van using government auction websites, Whitworth said.
Rod Morgan, county administrator, informed the commission that no budget amendment is needed to purchase the item currently.
In other news, the commission granted permission to the Mt. Pleasant and Damascus senior citizens centers to pursue grants to purchase vehicles. Morgan said the grants are available to the centers if they supply a 20-percent match.
Morgan noted Mt. Pleasant already has the match money available, while District 3 Commissioner Robert Stephens said Damascus also has the money available.
Last month, the Commission opened bids for paper and janitorial services and tabled them to have time to analyze them. In Monday’s meeting, Morgan asked the commission to rescind the bids and seek three separate bids – one each for paper, food and janitorial services.
The move was approved unanimously.
The next commission meeting is scheduled for February 27 at 9 a.m. at the Coffee County Community Room.
