The sixth grade students at Fort Rucker Elementary School had the unique privilege of meeting a real American hero. Tuskegee Airman Colonel Herbert Carter was at the Fort Rucker Post Exchange, Feb. 3. Events from his time as an aviator in World War II were depicted in the film Red Tails. Carter spoke to the large crowd about his days as a Tuskegee Airman and the importance of being an American.
Sixth grade student, Hunter Lukacz created a Red Tail aircraft picture for Carter. All sixth grade students and teachers signed the artwork. Hunter presented his picture to Carter and thanked him for all that he has done for our country.
Sixth grade student Kyle Reese said that he enjoyed the part about how Colonel Carter met his wife Mildred and how they were both pilots. Mildred became the first female pilot to join the state's Civil Air Patrol Squadron in 1942. The two would fly their planes and meet over Lake Martin. Another student, Jade Shiffer said, “It was extraordinary. It’s not every day you get to meet a real American hero.” All 68 students were able to shake hands with Colonel Carter and thank him for his visit.
