The legislation he co-sponsored may be “just a small first step,” U.S. Rep. Bobby Bright told Enterprise Lions. “But I hope it’s a signal that our government is finally taking the problems posed by unchecked illegal immigration seriously.”
Bright is a co-sponsor of the SAVE Act, a bill designed to provide additional border security. The president recently signed the bill into law to provide additional resources for border security measures. “This legislation will provide 1,000 new border patrol agents, additional Immigration and customs enforcement officials and increased use of technology to crack down on those crossing our border illegally,” Bright said. “We can no longer wait to secure our border.”
“It’s past time for the federal government to do its job and effectively secure our borders,” Bright told the Lions. “People across the country have cried out for help long enough.”
Bright described a recent trip to the El Paso, Texas, border patrol sector. “After visiting the border, it became even clearer that we must provide those defending our border with additional, targeted resources,” he said.
Bright said he was gratified that the legislators were able to work in a bipartisan manner to obtain increased funding for national security. “This is not about being about being a Democrat or a Republican, it’s about being an American.”
“It’s easy to talk about securing the border, but it’s much more helpful and valuable to see the problem up close and find out what works and what doesn’t,” Bright said. “The tour of the El Paso certainly provided me with invaluable knowledge about some of the challenges along our southern border.
“Businesses take advantage of our broken borders and use illegal immigrants for cheap labor, which not only encourages additional immigration; it drives down wages for American citizens and makes jobs harder to find,” Bright said. “We must do more to both strengthen border security and crack down on those who hire illegal immigrants.”
