The Gulf Coast Community College Commodores found newly refurbished Ray Lolley Gym to their liking Tuesday as they throttled the outmanned Enterprise-State Community College Boll Weevils, 96-69.
“This really is a big improvement,” said Gulf Coast coach Jay Powell. “We haven’t been here in a couple of years, so this was a surprise.”
There were no surprises for the Weevils, who faced a team of 12 Commodores, eight of whom have already signed letters of intent with Division I colleges and universities for next season
“I feel good about the way we played,” ESCC coach Wesley Person said of his team’s performance against the No. 4 team in Florida. “This is what the pre-season is for, and the reason we scheduled Gulf Coast is for the experience it gave our players.
“I feel good that we were able to score (about) 70 points on them. We have a lot of work to do, but our guys ran with Gulf Coast and played until the end.”
James Lodman led ESCC with 26 points. Contavious Dorsey had 13 points, and Rodney Moss and Chris Blount had 10 each. Johnnie Davis Jr. led Gulf Coast with 26 points.
The Weevils host Albany Tech Thursday at 7 p.m.
The ESCC Weevil Women start the day’s action with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against Albany.
