Fourth-grade students in Coffee County and Elba school districts were provided an educational and fun day to learn about groundwater protection and conservation.
Students gathered at the Coffee County Farm Center Wednesday to learn by hands-on experiments of the water cycle, ground water conservation, contamination and how difficult it is to remove pollutants from groundwater.
The day’s events were sponsored by the Coffee County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Coffee County Extension System with Resources Conservation and Development.
According to Mike Harris of the CCSWCD, “the program we do each year is to increase children’s awareness of how important it is to learn about groundwater protection and how to conserve it. We involve them with actual hands-on learning of the aquifer, filtration and conservation techniques.”
Along with the learning experiments, the students also enjoyed mascots of the CCSWCD. New Brockton High School students Jeremy Weeks as Ruby Raindrop and Nick Stephenson as Sammy Soil.
Students were encouraged at school before the program to make groundwater and conservation posters for a judging during the event.
First, second and third place poster winners received monetary checks from the CCSWCD.
Winners in the contest were, Elba Elementary School, first place, Logan Davis; second place, Keondra Burrows; third place, Mason Adkison; Kinston winners were, first place, Afton Smith; second place, Victoria Weeks; third place, Alison Glass; New Brockton, first place, Scena Allen; second place, Hanna Lindsey; third place, Madison Ellis; Zion Chapel, first place, Sheldon Hucko; second place, Kinley Parker; and third place, Jordyn Banta.
