The support he received was incredible, Earl Daniels said Thursday as he reflected on the 100-mile Motorcycle Poker Run fundraiser planned Saturday on his behalf.
Sponsored by the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association of Alabama and the Road Warriors Chapter of The American Badgers Motorcycle Club, the fundraiser will begin at Enterprise Power Sports with 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. check-in and first bike out at 10 a.m.
The event is a fundraiser to help defray medical expenses incurred when Daniels, a retired military man, was hit by a car while riding his Harley to work as a Fort Rucker Motorcycle Course Instructor.
He lost the lower part of his leg and required several surgeries to repair his shattered hip, said event organizer Bruce Bradley.”Our goal is to help with some of the costs associated with this tragic accident.
“It was just the right thing to do,” Enterprise Power Sports Owner Rick Rikard said
while explaining how he got involved in the event. Rikard’s store sells motorcycles, dirt bikes and All-Terrain Vehicles.
All active military, National Guard and and reservists who ride motor cycles on and off post must complete the Fort Rucker Motorcycle Course.
“So we see a lot of military come through our doors,” Rikard said Thursday. “And when we learned that (the fundraiser was for) a man who did so much to help others be safe on motorcycles, we knew we had to be part of it.”
The event’s finish is at Pop’s Oyster Bar and Bradley said Daniels has been given doctor’s permission to attend. “You cannot believe the incredibly great attitude of this guy,” Bradley said.
Daniels said Thursday the incredible support of his family and friends has meant the most. “The support I received was incredible: Emails, phone calls, visits.”
April 1 is the date Daniels expects to return to work with the assistance of a wheel chair and crutches, he said. And yes, he said, he will ultimately ride a motorcycle again, “God willing.”
