Freedom Fest
Freedom Fest 2009 at Fort Rucker will be on the fields on both sides of Andrews Avenue between Dean and Crusader streets in the vicinity of the Air Assault Track Friday from 4-11 p.m. The event will include a children’s fun zone area, soldier obstacle training course, pony rides, performances by the 98th Army Band, aircraft static displays, vendor exhibits and the area’s largest fireworks display. Averett-Byrd reunion
The 92nd annual Averett-Byrd reunion will be Saturday at the Daleville Cultural and Convention Center. This reunion is for descendants of the Earnest Linwood Averett, Mary Ann Curenton Averett, Sidney Johnston Byrd and Lovie Elizabeth Waters Byrd families. The reunion will begin with lunch at noon, followed by a short program recognizing each of the 11 families.

Tailgate party

Youth college
A second session of Enterprise-Ozark Community College’s Youth College will be July 13-16 at the Fort Rucker site. Classes include arts and crafts, magic, science, golf, and more. Participating children must be entering second through eighth grades this coming fall. Each course has a $25 registration fee and is limited to 10-25 students. Some classes also have additional supply fees. A student registering for the maximum of three classes will receive a free Youth College T-shirt. Registrations must be made in person at Building 4502 at the Fort Rucker site, with registration fees due at that time. Registration deadline is July 6 at 4:30 p.m. Call 598-3438.

CPR course
The American Red Cross is offering a CPR instructor course at the Chapter office in Westgate Shopping Center Suite 25. Participants must be current in CPR and will be tested on CPR skills. Cam and Devens’ All Winners Charity Fishing Tournament will be Saturday, July 18, at Frank Jackson State Park in Opp. Registration fee is $15 per person. Motorcyle run
The American Cancer Society’s third annual “Rolling Thunder” motorcycle ride will be Saturday, July 25. The bikers will ride 150 miles to help raise money for the fight against cancer. Miss Wiregrass pageants
The Miss Wiregrass Area scholarship pageants will be Saturday, July 25, at the Cultural Arts Center in Dothan. The pageant will feature Liz Cochran, Miss Alabama 2009; Raquel Martin, Miss Wiregrass Area 2009; and Lauren Hunt, Miss Wiregrass Area Outstanding Teen 2009. Miss Wiregrass Area is a Miss Alabama/Miss America preliminary. The winner will represent the Wiregrass in the Miss Alabama pageant and receive a $1,000 scholarship and other prizes and awards. Young women from age 17 and a senior in high school through 23 who live, work or go to school in the 334 phone exchange area are eligible. Contestants for the Miss Wiregrass Area Outstanding Teen preliminary must be at least age 13 and in the eighth grade through age 17 and a junior in high school. Rising Star pageant
The Miss Wiregrass Area Rising Star Princess Panache is Saturday, July 25, at the Cultural Arts Center in Dothan. This program is open to all girls age 7-11 who live in the 334 phone exchange area. Activities include interview and stage walk practice and critique, crafts with Sara York, Miss Wiregrass Area 2008, pageant picture with Miss Alabama 2009 Liz Cochran and participation in the Miss Wiregrass Area pageant that night. The new Rising Star’s picture will be printed in the Miss Alabama program book and she will attend a reception with Miss Alabama 2009 Liz Cochran. The Coffee County Farmers Federation/Alfa Farmers will have two $1,000 per year scholarships available to selected graduating high school seniors from schools in Coffee County or living in Coffee County and graduating from schools in another county. Also eligible are those who are presently enrolled or those planning to enroll in Auburn University, Alabama A&M and Tuskegee majoring in any curriculum in the college of agriculture, school of forestry, agriculture education, fisheries, horticulture or pre-veterinary medicine.
