“The reason for the season” is the focus of the eighth annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony tonight at the Recreational Complex on Highway 167 North.

“This is truly a season of giving,” Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell said as he outlined the events planned for what he calls “a traditional, old fashioned Christmas tree lighting.”

The children attending the ceremony, which begins at 6 p.m., will be invited to join Boswell in switching on the lights on the 30-foot tree and will be invited to guess how many jelly beans are in a container. The “best guesser” wins a prize, Boswell said.

Christmas is my time of year, said Boswell. “It’s a fun time of year for adults and children alike and we try to capture both the traditions and the real meaning of the Christmas season with our ceremony.”

The “reason for the Christmas season” will be highlighted as the Rev.Neil Epler from St. Luke United Methodist Church delivers the invocation, the Rev.Todd Baucum from First Presbyterian Church delivers the Biblical narration of Jesus Christ’s birth and the Rev. Keith Ellison of the New Jerusalem Church delivers the benediction.

The Enterprise High School JROTC will post the colors, the First Baptist Church Children’s Choir will lead the crowd singing Christmas Carols and Jackie Quisenberry from the Flower Lovers Garden Club will read “Every Light a Prayer for Peace.”

Free refreshments will be available, Boswell said. Cookies are provided by Century 21 and hot cocoa and coffee by the Enterprise Parks and Recreation Department.

A highlight of the event is the arrival of Santa Claus, said Boswell. “The way he arrives at the ceremony is different every year: Once it was helicopter, once it was by horse and buggy.” Whichever way Santa arrives this year remains a top secret until tonight, he said. “You just never know.”
