Local reality star to appear on Oprah

One local celebrity recently spent some time with the most powerful woman in America.

Enterprise resident Roger Schultz, who lost 164 pounds as a contestant on the fifth season of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser”, joined several other cast members for a reunion show with Oprah Winfrey.

Filming the “Secrets to the Biggest Loser” episode, which airs Thursday Oct. 30 at 4 p.m., was a “first class” experience, according to Schultz.

Oprah and her staff took such good care of us,” said Schultz. “We were treated like we were Tom Cruise.”

Trainers from the show Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels jined Schultz on stage, as well as past contestants Ali Vincent, Bernie Salazar, Curtis and Mallory Bray, Mark and Jay Kruger, Bette Sue Burkland, Julie Hadden and Matt Hoover. Suzy Hoover also appeared through videoconference.

“It was all about how we’ve maintained the loss and what our inspirations are. My segment was what I ate before versus what I eat now,” said Schultz. “I was eating about 9,000 calories a day. Hamburger Helper, Fig Newtons, Oreos... it was ridiculous. Now I eat about 2,200 calories a day.”

Schultz said he and a few other cast members commiserated about the lack of healthy meals in Southern cuisine.

“Don’t ask for a nutritional chart any place you go. They’ll look at you like you’re crazy,” he said.

Schultz did admit to splurging on decadent Chicago fare during his all-expenses paid trip.

“I did go out for some deep dish pizza after the taping,” he said. “But the night before we all went out for sushi.”

The gift shop at Harpo studios was one of the most impressive sights, said Schultz.

“I spent way too much money in there,” he said. “I bought an Oprah warm-up suit, Oprah Christmas decorations, an Oprah magazine. She’s on everything! It was like Disneyworld.”
