Rain came mid-morning to festival-goers Saturday at the New Brockton Spring Festival, but grillers continued the tradition of barbecuing for the annual contest.
Vendors managed to sell a few wares and baked goods until the rains came and packed up quickly after 11 a.m.
Officials in the barbecue contest changed locations, moving into the police station section of what was the former town hall for judging the latest creations.
Winners in the contest in the adult division were, first place, Barbara Cole; second place, Wooten Chapel; and third place, Willie Hagler of Uncle Willie’s Barbecue.
Youth division winners, Remington and Marquette Cook, took home top prize with a barbecue chicken recipe.
Coordinator of the contest Stan Windham said during next year’s contest, “we hope to promote the youth division in getting the kids out here and having them enter in the contest. I know this year the rain kept some away, but maybe next year we’ll have a lot more.”
Vendors, such as the New Brockton Beautification Committee, sold candy, cakes and pies, along with members of the youth team and others with Wooten Chapel Assembly of God Church. Wooten Chapel gave away balloons and had baked cakes and cupcakes to sale to help raise funds for the youth.
A unique vendor, Melissa Baxley of Samson, provided festival attendees with soaps and creams made of goat’s milk.
“The soap is actually good for eczema and acne and has a lot of properties in it. It also contains lactic acid which is a good remedy,” she explained. “All of our soaps and lotions are made from authentic goat’s milk.”
The Treasured Teats booth of Baxley’s carried Mother’s Day baskets, give lotions and soaps and a variety of items made from the milk.
Cheryl Lindley and Belinda Patterson worked in the Tastefully Simple booth of easy to prepare gourmet meals.
“We have such good and simple gourmet meals to make because people in this day and age are always busy and they need good nutrition and good meals to make easily.”
