The Enterprise Wildcats improved to 18-5 Monday when they beat Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, 63-56, in Lolley Gym on the Enterprise-Ozark Community College campus.
The visitors dressed but six players; one player was out with pneumonia and three others were attending Tuesday’s presidential inauguration.
Despite the meager number of players, the visitors gave the Wildcats a run for their money.
Enterprise trailed after the opening period, 12-9, and was behind 22-19 at halftime before rallying to take a 40-39 lead going into the fourth period.
The Cats surged ahead briefly early in third period but never pulled away in the 8-minute span. In a major momentum shift, though, the Cats scored 7 points in 10 seconds with a little more than 2 minutes remaining in the third quarter when Chris Murry hit a 3-pointer and Tony Gray got two slams off interceptions of inbound passes to go ahead 38-34.
The fourth quarter belonged to Enterprise.
“We were fortunate to wear them down in the fourth period,” said Enterprise coach Albert Weeden Jr. “We were fortunate they were missing three of their players. I am proud of the win.
“Every game for us now is like a playoff game; that’s how we prepare. When we get into the playoffs, each game is a one-and-done situation. Lose and you go home.”
Gray led Enterprise scoring with 26 points and Murry added 21 to the winning effort.
Enterprise, the regular-season 6A Area 5 champion will host the area tournament in February and has an automatic spot in sub-region play after that.
But there’s still work to do in the regular season starting Thursday when the Cats travel to face Barbour County., one of the top programs in the state.
