Watermelon contest Saturday
A way to beat the heat and have free family fun begins at 8 a.m. Saturday as the annual watermelon contests begin.
Awards will be given for the biggest and sweetest watermelons in adult and youth categories. And everyone is invited to take on defending champion Greg Casey in the watermelon seed spitting contest.
The annual event will be held at the Enterprise Farmers’ Market at North Main Street and Highway 134 next to Dog Days Daycare.
Enterprise Community Service Coordinator Birgit Briggs said, “There will be watermelon, of course, but there is a large variety of other fruits and vegetables for sale at the farmer’s market.”
“The produce you buy at the farmer’s market is the freshest and tastiest available,” Briggs said. “It’s straight from the farm and this is a great opportunity for the community to support our farmers.” Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell said. “The market is a great community gathering place. It’s a place where shoppers can connect with farmers, bring their children, meet with friends and enjoy the summer season.”
An inflatable play set will be on site Saturday for children, Briggs said. “There will also be a prize giveaway during the event thanks to the generous donations from many of our area businesses.”
The market will be open its regular hours, 7 to 11 a.m., as it is on Saturdays and Tuesdays, said Briggs. The market is also open Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m.
