The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6683 hosted a Veterans Day ceremony with the Advance NCO Academy of Fort Rucker Wednesday in Enterprise. The ceremony began at 11 a.m., signifying the time the armistice was signed to end World War I on Nov. 11, 1918.
The crowd of more than 100 veterans, guests and families, included 14 members of the Patriot Guard Riders. Four military veterans accompanied the riders.
“We came out to support local veterans and show our gratitude for all they have done and are still doing,” Sgt. 1st Class Robert Price said.
VFW Post Commander Paul Kasper presented Price a framed picture of an American eagle to honor the group and in appreciation of their service.
Sgt 1st Class Allen King presented a tribute to all veterans who have served their country.
Kasper explained the meaning of Armistice Day, also known as Veterans Day, which is held annually on Nov. 11. According to Kasper, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1919. Congress approved legislation in 1938 to make Nov. 11 an annual holiday dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day officially received its name in 1926 through a congressional resolution, Kasper said.
In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming Nov. 11 as Veterans Day.
“This date became a date of historic significance to honor the many Americans who fought for their country,” Kasper said.
VFW Post Assistant Commander Bob Cooper introduced John Sciascia, DAV sergeant of arms and a member of the Vietnam Dog Handler Association. Sciascia spoke about his time in service and thanked all who have served the United States.
