Salvation Army’s Area Director Brenda Furqueron said the number of people who need assistance is up this year, with job layoffs and the economy, “we are trying to help people who need our help.”

Furqueron was a guest at the Sunrise Rotary Club’s meeting Thursday morning and received a donation of $600 from the club’s members. The club’s members also volunteered to ring the bell for the Salvation Army on Saturday, Dec. 19.

Sunrise Rotary Club President Russ Nichols said the members were happy to give to the Salvation Army this year because it helps so many people in lots of ways.

“We’re proud to make this donation and we’re a small club, but we felt like the Salvation Army could disperse the funds to assist people who need it this holiday season,” he said.

Furqueron said even though the thrift store for the Salvation Army had closed in Enterprise, the organization had opened a social services office where the thrift store used to be located.

“At our old location in Enterprise, we now have a services clerk and a food bank on location. People can come in and fill out forms for assistance through this office, which covers Coffee and Covington counties,” she said. “The clerk will be able to write out food vouchers at the Enterprise office and people can turn in their forms and pick them up.”

The Salvation Army’s Social Services office is located on Highway 84 West at the former location of the thrift store.

“If people would simply like to donate this year, they can send a check to the Salvation Army, P. O. Box 490, Ozark, Al. 36361,” Furqueron said. “They can write on the check which county, either Coffee or Covington, where they want the funds to go.”
