The football competition in the Iron Bowl between Auburn University and the University of Alabama is heating up, but the competition to feed dogs and cats at the S.O.S. Animal Shelter is a way for fans to express loyalty for either team and provide food to needy animals.
For the third year, SOS Animal Shelter and Exit Success Realty are teaming up to bring the local version of a competition that means so much to Alabama and Auburn fans and to dogs and cats looking for a home.
On Friday, Iron Bowl fans will get the chance to put dog and cat food or money where their loyalty lies by bringing donations for the SOS Animal Shelter to Exit Success Realty at 1208 Rucker Blvd. in Enterprise.
Two trucks, one for Auburn and one for Alabama, will be in the parking lot so fans can bring the pet food to support their choice of teams.
Today through Friday, fans can contribute pet food, which will be totaled up for each team on Friday. Fans can also contribute Clorox and cleaning supplies for the shelter.
In 2006, the first year of the pet food drive, the shelter collected 3,000 pounds of food. In 2008, 1,700 pounds of food were collected by fans of the two teams.
SOS Animal Shelter Board of Directors President Bill Brooks said, “we appreciate the time and support Exit Realty gives to this competition. It’s all about the animals and right now, we are in need of food for the shelter animals. If we have an excess of dog or cat food, we pass it on to other shelters.”
Brooks said the shelter currently has 27 cats and 30 dogs.
“We stay almost filled with dogs and cats,” he said. “We’re a non-profit and no-kill shelter because we want people to provide these animals a good home. Animals have no voice, so we have to speak for them and take care of them.”
Exit Success Realty’s Kristina Klamberg said she hopes to collect more food for pets this year than ever before.
“We wanted to find a way to give back to the community,” she said. “We want patrons to come out and enjoy a free tailgate lunch with us on Friday and support our only no-kill shelter in Enterprise. This is important for all of us.”
Klamberg said the event will kick off at 8 a.m. Friday and will continue until 5 p.m.
Bragging rights in 2006 went to Auburn, but Alabama tied up the series in 2007.
“Join us for lots of fun, enjoy the tailgate lunch and help your team and S.O.S. win. If you can’t make it to Exit on Friday, we’ll be happy to take your donation throughout the week,” Klamberg said.
Klamberg said food, supplies and monetary donations for the shelter will be accepted.
