An opportunity to do what she loves best is why Mary Ann Bearman says she loves working on the fourth floor of Medical Center Enterprise. Bearman is a registered nurse and charge nurse at MCE. She is one of 10 area hospital employees recently named a “Hospital Hero” by the Alabama Hospital Association.
The award came after MCE’s fourth floor nurse manager Serena Lewis nominated Bearman for the honor. “She came to work here a year ago and she came in like gangbusters,” Lewis said Friday. “She doesn’t hide her 43 years of nursing experience, she shares it with everybody.”
The “Hospital Heroes” is an awards program sponsored by the Alabama Hospital Association, a statewide trade organization based in Montgomery. This year marks the seventh year the association has held the awards program to “recognize the great accomplishments and compassion of hospital employees and to highlight health careers,” according to a news release from Alabama Hospital Association President Michael Horsley.
“Mary Ann has energy and joy that is infectious,” Lewis said. “She is known as someone who is always aware of the needs of those around her and willing to help out in any way she can.”
“She is observant of the needs of this hospital,” said Lewis. “And when Mary Ann suggests better ways to do something, she offers to help implement those ideas.”
“She’s created educational boards for us and volunteers regularly to assist with other duties that may arise outside of her work area to help out at the hospital,” Lewis said. “Mary Ann is eager to make this hospital the best.”
With more than 43 years of nursing experience Bearman said she has worked in almost every aspect of the field and at every level, but working with patients is her first love. “I’ve done almost all of it,” she said. “At this time of my life I’m lucky enough to be able to do what I love to do best.”
“I love working with patients,” she said. “This is just what I do.”
