Kinston teacher loves the wonders of science

Kinston High School teacher Angela Kelley teaches science to 10th and 12th grade students. Kelley said growing up, teachers in elementary and high school made a huge impact on her life.

A Kinston High School teacher admits she is a science fanatic.

Angela Kelley, who teachers 10th through 12th graders, wants to show students science is exciting and wants to make a huge impact on them.

“I had great teachers growing up that made a huge impact on me as a student,” she said. “I want to do the same for my students.”

Kelley, in her eighth year as an educator, is originally from Guntersville, and taught at Sumter County High School in Loachapoka and at Opp Middle School before coming to Kinston.

Kelley graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in 2001 and received a master’s degree from Auburn in 2004.

“I do love science, and I hope by showing students the excitement of it, that they will catch it too.”

As for favorite moments in her career, Kelley said there have been many.

“The most recent moment was when students thanked me for preparing them for the graduation exam,” she said. “This meant a lot to me.”

As a legacy for her students, “I want my students to know that they can be successful and to put forth an effort to achieve goals. I want them to know that education is the key to making their goals become a reality.”

Past and current mentors include Karen Thornton, Debbie Driver and Sonya Shaw. Kelley said, “Tthey always help me out when I need something or have a question.”

Favorite music: I love all types of music. I have a very diverse collection.

Favorite pastime: Spending time with my family, shopping or relaxing at home.

Favorite books: The Ya-Ya Sisterhood series, Twilight series and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Pet peeve: People that ride in the left lane and pants that are too short.

Values most important to you: Having a conscience and choosing to do the right thing even though it may not be popular; setting a good example for students and my child; living a positive and happy life; being productive.

How would your friends describe you to a stranger? Friendly, outgoing, funny and loyal.

Worst fear: Not being here to raise my daughter.

Family: Married to Russell Kelley for four years; 1-year-old daughter, Brynne Kelley.
